Using only top quality brands with a reliable track record and that meet our high standards, you can be sure of accurate wheel ratings.
Why does Load Rating Mean & Why does it Matter?
Not all wheels are made the same. And in Australia, we have strict standards to stand by. In conjunction with your tyres, load rating determines the capacity for a wheel to handle the load/weight of a vehicle.
Road wheels and tyres are vital to a vehicle's safety. Since 1971, Australian Design Rules (ADRs) have been progressively introduced to specify wheel and tyre strength, air pressures, speed and load ratings and allowable combinations of wheel rims and tyres.
Not having the correct load rated wheels for your vehicle can lead to wheel failure causing them to crack under the pressure of the weight. In combination with high speeds, this can fatal accidents. It can also void insurance claims.
How do I check a car's Load rating and a wheels load rating?
Since 1973 ADRs required cars to be fitted with a tyre placard which specifies the wheel and tyre combinations recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. Check your vehicle's placard which is commonly placed in the driver's door, glove box of fuel filler cap. There it will specify the vehicles load rating.
To check a wheel's load rating, look at the back of the wheel and the weight will be stamped there.
How do I calculate load rating?
By checking your vehicle placard, you can see the specifications by the manufacturer on the weight of the vehicle. Use this number in conjunction with the number at the back of your wheel.
For example;
Your vehicle is rated at 3,000KG.
Your wheels/rims are rated at 800KG per wheel. You must multiply this number by 4 (because there are 4 wheels on a vehicle). 800x4 = 3200KG.
As this number exceeds the 3000KG by 200KG, these wheels meet and exceed the load rating.
Please be aware that the typical load in your vehicle does impact on the weight the wheels must carry. For example if you carry 500KG of bricks everyday for your work, you will have to take this into account in your calculations.
